I may not have been ready to turn 24 quite yet (I feel like I’m in my mid 20s now) but I was definitely ready to celebrate in our new home,Valencia. Ryan and I like to plan surprise activities for each others’ birthdays which makes it all the more exciting.
I felt like a child at Christmas as I woke up at 7am eager for the day ahead. A couple of hours later I got my present from Ryan, a Garmin running watch. I had been talking about wanting one for quite a while now, so I was (and still am) ecstatic about it, it’s already making me much more motivated to run.
For breakfast, we went to a nearby bakery/cafe and had some delicious baked goods. I decided to try some traditional Spanish horchata, but I just couldn’t decide if I liked it. I didn’t actually know what it was made of but I found out that there are lots of different versions, although in Spain they usually make it with tigernuts, water and sugar. I’ll have to try it again to make up my mind whether I like it or not.
The next part of my day was the start of the surprises. I love not knowing where I’m going or what I’m doing, so as we got on the metro I was getting very excited. We got off and walked through a lovely park and I soon realised where we were going- the bioparc! I love animals so this was a great place to go on my birthday. We spent a few hours there covering the vast area. We saw some animals for the first time, like dik-diks (a type of small antelope) and aardvarks. There was a tank where we could see lots of fish and to our surprise there was also a hippo swimming amongst them. My favourite were the meerkats, they are so adorable, I just want to cuddle them!
We relaxed for a while at home before heading out to dinner. We went to a lovely vegetarian restaurant called Malmö where I had some delicious pasta filled with pumpkin and a Kirr Royale cocktail. It was the perfect end to a wonderful day. I am very thankful to have spent it in Valencia with Ryan who made it so special.
